Should the Federal Government be allowed to Regulate Information on the Internet?
Introduction
Internet regulation is the act of taking charge of the data that can be accessed in the internet; it is categorized in to two major categories including the censorship of data or the taking charge or controlling of the internet. The internet in the world plays a vital role in the shapes of businesses, education, and other important areas of life. Internet is a backbone to the current world operation and should not be regulated. In Internet regulation some policies are set up to determine the things that should appear online and the things that should not be appear.
According to the latest developments the internet is a means that is widely used in the global communication (David, 2007). The internet today is growing at a high rate that has left the international community with a dilemma to face. People using the internet can exercise their freedom in the uninterrupted electronic means of information and communication; however the internet freedom has raised concern to some of the users. The concern rises from the rampant misuse of the internet and this has raised the issue of internet regulation with a request for the government to come up with means of implementing the internet restriction measures.
Reasons for internet regulation needs
Some of the concerns that have led to the rise in the internet regulation demand from the concerned users include the challenge faced by many national policy makers who have to work round the clock in the internet. In the policy making and business sector the internet is used as a means of trade and also in broadcasting and print media the internet is also the basic means by which the electronic industries and the business sectors address their issues of concern. Conferences have been set up to create means of tracking child pornography and prostitution as a means of curbing the harmful internet usage on children. The other challenge in the internet use is that even though it provides international opportunities for business through the linking of various parts of the world leading to easier e-commerce with international partners there is the challenge from abroad. This challenge arises from unequal opportunities due to the dominance of the internet by some countries such as the US, this has a cultural and political threat as the completion in the economic pressures persists.
The internet has an excessive amount of pornography that is of all kinds and the children using the internet come across the harmful materials which are embarrassing. Some of the sites in the internet create the world division as they are linked with racist nature (Rao, 1999). all this information is free and this makes the responsible parents, teachers and those who are concerned with children to show their want for the internet to be regulated to some extent and prevention of such materials. Other illegal acts on the internet is the crimes that are committed online, in this area most of the people who commit these crimes use the internet for credit card fraud, money laundering, copyright theft, cyber terrorism, prostitution, bomb making instructions, drug smuggling among many other illegal activities (Antonial, 2006).
