President Obama’s Success in Past 4 Years
Introduction
Barrack Hussein Obama became the 44th president of the United States in 2008. His ascension to presidency was embraced with great jubilation and joy among the American people. He came into power when America was recovering from an economic crisis. United States had its soldiers in Iraq and was facing threats of terrorism. The health care needed reforms and the education system needed funding. Despite all this the people of America were optimistic that the future was bright and that change had come to the nation (Lee, para. 1-3; FishOutofWater, para. 1-6).
This paper talks about the successes of President Obama for the last four years. The paper will cover a wide area, from education, security, economy to healthcare. It can be said that in his first four years the president had several successes
Obama’s Success
Ending Iraq war
When president Obama came into power in 2008, there were thousands of American troops in Iraq. The troops had been deployed in the nation to participate in combat and assist in the fight against the development of weapons of mass destructions. The presence of the United States troops in the country had made Iraq become a War zone. This war had taken the lives of many United States soldiers together with Iraqis civilians and soldiers. President Obama helped to end this War by withdrawing United States troops from Iraq. The president managed to reduce the number of troops from 180,000 to 50,000; the forces that are present in the country and only there for training purposes and not war. This act by the president has reduced gunfire and War in Iraq. The country now, though sometimes there is fighting, is much better than it was before. The people of Iraq can now enjoy peace. The current situation has given them a hope for the future. They can now see a better future for their country and children. Therefore, the first success of President Obama in the last four years was ending the War in Iraq (CBC, para. 3-10).
Improving United States Security and Foreign Relations
In his last four years in office president Obama followed all the national policies on security and thus managed to frustrate al Qaeda’s the leadership of the group through the killing of their leader Osama. President Obama interfered with terrorist’s activities by ending the reign of Osama. Osama bin Laden was notorious terrorists responsible for the 9/11 bombing in United States. The terrorist attack by the Al-Qaida grouped led to the death of many Americans. The two airplanes crash on the twin towers was a great blow to America’s security agencies. After the 9/11, Osama disappeared and he was no where to be found. American security agencies endeavored to find him for he was responsible for the attack. They waged war on terrorism and al-Qaida group. Studies reveal that United States military searched for Osama in Afghanistan, in caves and Pakistan. The Bush administration despite their search was not able capture the leader of this terrorist group. However, it was under Obama’s leadership that Osama was finally located, attacked and killed by the United States troops. The killing of Osama was a great blow to al-Qaeda group and terrorism as a whole (White House, para. 1-15).
In addition to the capture and killing of Osama, the president urged the agencies to be transparent and cooperative at all cost. It is in his leadership that security agencies have managed to cooperate and share information with one another. The Federal Bureau of Investigation is able to cooperate with the Central Intelligence and local law enforcement to promote the security on American citizens. The reforms passed after the attack with the pressure from the president, has enabled the sharing of information between security agencies. The security of the United States, for example cyber security has been improved through the passing of an act that increased cyber security preventing the United States from cyber attacks (White House, para. 5-15).
The president also developed an international coalition that assisted in the ending of the Libyan killings. The coalition was also in support of the people of Libya in the removal of Moammar Qadhafi. By his action he managed to save many Libyan nationals from attacks by Moammar. The United States did this by sharing the expenses incurred during the War. This helped the Libyan nationals receive justice. It also gave them a chance to rebuild democratic states that treated all people as equal and citizens of the country. Apart from his unwavering support of Libyan people, the President also managed to assist in keeping nuclear weapons away from terrorists. In 2009, President Obama made known his desire to have a peaceful world which was free of nuclear terrorism. He went ahead to develop plans and steps that would assist in doing this. First of all he started by proposing measures which spearheaded the reduction of the number and use of nuclear weapons by countries that have them. The proposal also endeavored to prevent any other nation from developing nuclear weapons; he managed to do this by increasing the power of non-proliferation regime and holding accountable countries that went against this directive. This objective came to pass in 2010 when the president held a summit that dealt with issues of nuclear weapons. It is here that the leaders present pledged to carry out certain steps so as reduce the development, possession and use of nuclear weapons by terrorists on any other country (White House, para. 1-20).
In his last four years, the president has also managed to foster peace in various countries like Sudan, Israel and Middle East. Studies reveal that the President stood firm on the issue of Israel security and that of Middle East. His position was that Israel is a two nation State that has the Jewish and Palestine nationals. He has managed to ensure that these nations are at peace by making the United States committed to Israelis peace and safety. In addition, President Obama managed to lead other nations in bringing the peace and development of the South Sudan country. The United States with other nations like Kenya came together to ensure that there was a smooth separation of the South from the North. They also made sure that the south Sudan government received all the help they needed in forming their government and nation. After the development of South Sudan his administration has purposed to provide humanitarian support for the people, and develop a peace agreement among the Northern and Southern Sudan (White House, para. 23-25a).
