HIV-How the Maladaptive and Physiological Responses Might Differ
Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is a retrovirus that alters the immune system, especially CD4+ cells, crucial for immune response coordination. In the process of affecting the body, the retro-virus links to the CD4 receptors on the T cells. On top of that, it combines with the cell membrane and introduces its RNA into the cell of the host body. With the presence of the enzyme reverse transcriptase, HIV can change its RNA into DNA that further combines with the genome of the cell (Masenga, Mweene, Luwaya, Muchaili, Chona, & Kirabo, 2023). In addition, this combination takes over the host cells and replicates itself, forming new particles that continue affecting CD4+ T cells. The active CD4+ T cells exhaust as time passes, resulting in immunodeficiency (Masenga et al., 2023). For this reason, the body becomes weak, making it prone to other diseases like cancer. If immediate treatment is administered, HIV advances to Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS), which is known for its destruction of the immune system.
