Nephrolithiasis is a developing urological health issue, and its prevalence in America is about 8.8% (Huether, 2019). The types of kidney stones are classified according to the minerals composing the stone, and they include calcium, cystine, uric acid, and struvite stones, with calcium stones (calcium oxalate and calcium phosphate) being the most common in patients with nephrolithiasis. The two basic phenomena causing nephrolithiasis are supersaturation of the urines by stone-forming constituents and deposition of stone-forming material on a particular type of nidus (Randall's plaque). These two phenomena require a nidus, a foreign body or crystal, to precipitate on. In supersaturation, the concentration of calcium, uric acid, and oxalate ions exceeds their solubility, enabling them to precipitate on a nidus, forming stones (Huether, 2019).
