Psychodynamic Theories
These theories are based on the theory of psychoanalysis by Sigmund Freud and emphasize that behavioral causes are rooted in the unconscious, and that our personality is influenced by childhood experiences. The key advantage of these theories is that hey highlight the importance of childhood experiences. However, a disadvantage is that they are based on the theory of determinism and therefore reject freewill.
Trait Theory
Sometimes referred to as the five-factor or big-five model, the trait theory of personality suggests that people have certain personality traits which ultimately shape their behavior and attitudes. The advantage of trait theories is that they categorize behaviors objectively which makes it easy it understand. However, a key limitation is that the trait theory does not address why certain traits develop. In this regard, critics have argued that it cannot essentially be used to predict particular behaviors in individuals.
