Behavioral, humanistic and cognitive therapies are three forms of psychotherapy, which are often confusing. It is vital to contrast and compare the nature of these psychotherapies in order to understand their differing processes of change, therapeutic interventions, and theoretical rationale.
Cognitive psychotherapy is based on the theoretical rationale that how people feel is determined by what they think. Mental disorders, for example, depressions are known to occur as a consequence of faulty thoughts and erroneous beliefs. Cognitive therapy is useful to correct such inaccurate beliefs to improve an individual’s perception of emotional state and life events (Nevid 10). Cognitive therapist works with the client to challenge thinking errors. By identifying alternative ways of how to view situation and events at hand, the individual’s view of life including their mood will improve.
Humanistic psychotherapy is a therapy that focuses on all aspects of human experience, and it functions based on individual experience to develop both stronger self-perception and individual’s formative and developmental processes.
