Name Institution Instructor Course Date Injustice Today: Refugees and Migrants Executive Summary The problems with migrants and refugees that are entering the United States of America are still human rights issues. Migrants and refugees in the United States encounter numerous obstacles, such as language barriers, discrimination in the workplace, lack of opportunities for employment, lack of educational opportunities, and lack of transportation opportunities. These are issues that indicate human rights violations of this sort of population that cannot participate with the rest of the society and are not treated similarly. This policy brief examines these challenges and provides suggestions regarding policy, such as adopting English as a Second Language (ESL) programs to circumvent immigration and refugee-based obstacles. Introduction & Problem Statement In recent years, troubling was already the case for the US, but refugees and migrants are already increasingly becoming a problem. The American immigration council (2020) states that the US has 14.3 of the foreign-born population of the world. However, massive human rights implementation brings perverse effects to them as these individuals come here merely to be stuck in systemic barriers and hostile treatment that usually denies them opportunities to live socially, economically, and educationally advanced lives. This is a problem of excessive strictness of the US immigration policy that is lacking in helping migrants and refugees. Migrants are confronted by legal obstacles, lack of language resources, and very often cannot secure employment, integrate into communities, and access basic services. They can have long-lasting negative effects, which include poverty, discrimination, and exclusion from social and economic participation. A continuation of this issue is exacerbated by government policies that restrict migrants' and refugees' ability to have access to asylum and rights protections, thereby leading to human rights violations (Human Rights Watch, 2024). A serious problem in itself is part of the language barrier. Unfortunately, many of the refugees who arrive in the US have very little English proficiency, and it is tough to successfully navigate a job interview, education, or daily activities. The situation is further complicated by a shortage of Language Learning resources, which refugees lack, which prevents them from assimilating into the surrounding community (Arcelus et al., 17). A good example of these challenges includes the United States-Mexico border. The rights of asylum seekers have been drastically reduced during recent political changes, particularly since the Trump administration has taken power. The policies that have arisen in which individuals cannot denounce their refugee status and are criminalized for their migrant status have created an atmosphere where refugees and migrants are seen as a threat to society rather than individuals seeking a better life. To further illustrate the importance of this issue, migrants and refugees are often treated with racist and xenophobic treatment at work and in social interactions. Such discrimination is not just an ethical problem but also constitutes an infringement of human rights since there should be no prejudice, no discrimination on the one hand, and on the other, no discrimination against people who are not native-born. As such, the refugee and migrant problem in the US is not only an issue of immigration policy but also a severe human rights problem. Solving this problem is not only the chance to improve millions of lives; it is a moral imperative for a country that values adhering to the principle of human dignity and equality.
