They both also shed light on systemic challenges such as substance abuse, underfunded schools, limited healthcare, and little job prospects that people in Appalachia and the Mississippi Delta communities face. In addition, they humanize these issues by focusing on individual stories of how they put resilience behind Courtney and Erica in Kentucky or the Delta, trying to break cycles of disadvantage. However, there are differences in tone and the scope of the subjects in question. Diane Sawyer's intimate interviews with affected families exemplify ABC News' reporting that is more emotionally driven and narrative-focused. In stark opposition, PBS NewsHour focuses on policy and analysis of economic history and the effects of structural inequality, tracing the history of slavery and racism in the Delta, among other things.
