According to Martin, global poverty occurs from structural inequalities, historical exploitation, and governments that are not reliable and do not allow people to survive with basic needs such as food, shelter, and health. On the other hand, oppression entails the systemic mistreatment of groups based on race, gender, or ethnicity, for the sake of enhancing the largest disparity. Exploitation is closely linked to these problems because vulnerable people are exploited for the profit of others. Social exclusion also denies individuals the right and opportunity to access the right human rights and essential rights. Forced Labor, Sex Trafficking, and Child Labor Some of the gravest forms of exploitation involve forced labor, sex trafficking, and child labor, and are built on these themes. The forcible or coerced labor involves forcing people to work, and the sex trafficking, mostly against women and children, means they are subject to commercial sexual exploitation. Similarly, child labor robs children of education and safety. Martin points out that traffickers capitalize on poverty and on weakness in the law. To combat these violations, advocates must intervene through human service professionals who advocate, offer trauma-informed care, and promote international cooperation. Mistreatment of Indigenous Populations and Refugees Additionally, indigenous populations and refugees have been mistreated since colonization, land theft, and systemic discrimination. Often, it is refugees fleeing conflict who are hostile, have insufficient or no access to healthcare and education, and lack legal status in host countries.
