There is a notion that hackers are intent on exploiting the internet for their personal gain, profits and wreck havoc on computer systems. However, Elazari points out that one of the well known hackers, Barnaby Jack found a way to hack into ATMs. Essentially, Elazari points out that there is a positive aspect to hacking, given that it is easier to understand vulnerabilities to the internet. Similar to the way innovators use prototypes, hackers can simulate attacks to show the level of threat to a computer system. Hence, in the modern world, hackers might be a solution to the vulnerabilities common in the internet and computer system as they allow people to respond to threats, as individuals and organizations become more proactive to fix problems in the information system.
The speaker highlights on the power that hackers have by being able to control things, using her first experience in hacking as an example o emphasize on the notion of power in hacking. Control and power are associated with hacking, but there is also responsibility that comes with great power (Elazari). Hence, it is necessary power of hacking for positive efforts, but black hat hackers can financial loss to corporations and government affiliated organizations. Identity theft is negative another aspect of hacking, but there are those who enjoy finding vulnerabilities in the information system. Even though, hackers break the law they are valuable to organizations and individuals who then take time to fix vulnerabilities.
