Media and Globalization
The emergence of a global village resulted in numerous studies on the subject of globalization. This is highlighted by the reality that Sterns (2010) and Northrup (n.d) made publications on the subject under discussion. What is globalization? The term globalization could be elucidated as the rapid expansion of international interaction. It is notable, however, that scholars from different fields have different opinions about the beginning of globalization. For instance, historians like Stearns (2010) believe that globalization began as early as 1000 CE while technicians believe globalization began with the advent of computers. This paper explains Stearns (2010) argument on globalization by discussing the network connections in the globalization era and its similarities to current globalization.
According to Stearns (p: 29), globalization began as early as 1000 CE. As evidence, the author articulates that new trends have characterized globalization, but what is important is that globalization was present before the cold war. Northrup (n.p) also holds a similar opinion because he argues that globalization began with the consolidation of Indian and Asian Ocean networks over a millennium ago. This reveals that international expansion began several decades ago. Stearns tries to justify his argument mainly by using history as a tool. Historian, David Northrup (n.p), stipulates that before 1000 CE factors influencing humanity were separate. During this period, contacts between different societies were negligible. Interestingly, after 1000 CE, these groups of people started living improved lives because of constant contacts. Of course, what happened at around 1000 CE was because of previous contacts. However, the new philosophies that followed are not extensions of the previous activities.
