As he quotes Nietzsche: “He who has a Why to live, can bear almost any How.” Frankl states that you cannot control what happens to you in life but you can control how you respond to it. Is the Code of Conduct an adequate touchstone document to provide service members the necessary psychological stamina and meaning to cope with captivity? If yes, how? (2006, p. 80-91) provides service members with adequate meaning and psychological stamina necessary to handle captivity. The focus of this touchstone document is to either minimize danger, maximize reward, or both at the same time (Steffian et al., 2006, p. 50). Wells (2020) draws his examples from World War II, where young aviators who flew with the Bomber Command and the Eighth Airforce had to adapt quickly to the demands of combat, including a demanding and life-threatening environment, intolerable physical challenges, and a relentless pressure to perform at all times (p. 66).
