Jay Allen’s Initial Post (Question B) This discussion will review the pros and cons of the Air Force's emphasis on instilling a warrior ethos in its members and discuss whether the concept currently used by the Air Force is effective. Chief of Staff of the Air Force (CSAF) General T. Michael "Buzz" Mosely described warrior ethos as a heritage of sacrifice. He stated that during WWII, the 8th Air Force had lost more airmen who died than the total number of Marines killed in the war. Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) caused the entire Air Force to unite and establish a common identity contributing to commitment, sacrifice, vigilance, motivation, and tough-mindedness. At the height of the Global War on Terror, warrior ethos was identified as tough-mindedness, tireless motivation, unceasing vigilance, a willingness to sacrifice one's life for the country, if necessary, and a commitment to be the world's premier air, space and cyberspace force (Johstono and Ladymon, The USAF's Warrior EthosLinks to an external site., 2024). In contrast, since linking the Air Force's existing core values into the warrior ethos created a new service behavior, creating uncertainty. Johstono and Ladymon stated, "The Air Force warrior ethos must make sense of harming and sacrificing by the just and expert application of military tools for a just cause. Uncertainty, incongruity, and debate about the fit of these behaviors to the concept put it on uneven ground. The official attributes are praiseworthy but have proven insufficient for gaining traction across the USAF as an authentic and compelling warrior ethos" (Johstono and Ladymon, The USAF's Warrior EthosLinks to an external site., 2024). Warrior ethos does not appear in Air Force Doctrine Publication (AFDP) 1 (2021). Former CSAF General Charles "CQ" Brown and Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force JoAnne Bass discussed the need for Airmen to become smarter, more creative, and empowered, who are innovative, who challenge and question, and who take risks. During this time, the Air Force warrior ethos discussion needed to be more compelling. However, CSAF General David Allvin's 2 October 2023 memorandum discussed SecAFs notion of One Team, One Fight as the Air Force service's ethos. Johstono and Ladymon stated, "The Air Force must work to articulate an ethos that combines the praiseworthy attributes of the existing warrior ethos, the cohesion, initiative, and rapidity of "One Team, One Fight," and a warrior's preparedness to employ violence for a just cause" (Johstono and Ladymon, The USAF's Warrior EthosLinks to an external site., 2024). In other words, the Air Force must continue to adopt its warrior ethos and prepare for future fights against its adversaries. For reference here is the initial question: Air Force doctrine and senior leadership require leaders to instill the “warrior ethos” in themselves and in their subordinates. Some might argue, however, that with the Air Force’s ever-increasing emphasis on technology, creative thinking, and innovation in the realm of air, space and cyber operations, the “warrior ethos” is actually an ineffective, outdated, and nostalgic concept, employed by the Air Force only to shore up its own anxieties about its military identity.
