Introduction
Restorative justice is becoming a popular avenue of crime management in various justice systems of the world. The popularity of restorative justice stems from the understanding that it encompasses multiple stakeholders with unique and impactful roles in managing crime. Restorative justice is anchored on insightful principles that focus on repair, accountability, inclusion, and integration. Some of the benefits that have been drawn from restoration justice include community strengthening, reduction in recidivism, and victim empowerment. Based on its unique approaches to managing crime, multiple cases have emerged of how restorative justice has helped to eliminate criminal activities and behaviors in some settings. In this presentation, emphasis is put on exploring restorative justice in the case of Donald Fields Jr., a murder offender who became a beneficiary of restorative justice.
The Case
The case involved a murder that occurred in 2016 in Durham, North Carolina. In that case, Donald Fields Jr., the offender who was 24 years old at the time, stabbed his father using a pocket knife.
