Alliance agreements allow an airline to market seats on some of its partner's flights. The United States of America Department of Transportation has granted immunity from American antitrust laws to large groups of airlines in alliances associated with international air transportation (Gillespie & Richard, 2012). Airline officials argue that their customers benefit from the antitrust immunity because it allows them to enjoy travel benefits, such as travel to many destinations at affordable rates (Bilotkach & Hüschelrath, 2011). On the other hand, customer advocates argue that antitrust immunity might lead to a loss of substantial immunity. This, therefore, shows that antitrust immunity can either be advantageous or disadvantageous to passengers.
