The key theme in the first article, “Crude Crunch,” is the influence of the Covid-19 pandemic in the Canadian oil industry. The writer underlines how oil firms in Canada are adversely affected by the pandemic due to a lack of sufficient funds to process thick bitumen and build more mines (The Economist, 2020). Some of these companies are currently making losses yet they have not paid wages, worsening their economic status.
Key Strategic Issues
The first strategic issue revealed in the article is the efforts shown by Justin Trudeau, where he focuses on transforming the oil industry and supporting them to overcome the challenge of insufficient oil. He advocates the government to buy the Trans Mountain pipeline from Kinder Morgan. The goal of this purchase is to bring more oil from Alberta to the Pacific.
Firms that produce oil are being encouraged to invest in research of oil refineries and build more of these entities to fill the current shortages.
