Merkt et al. (2021) did a qualitative study on forensic Mental Health Professionals' (MHPs) opinions on their dual loyalty conflicts. The study recruited and interviewed 32 forensic MHPs working in the criminal justice system’s (CJS) treatment settings. Each participant had a unique view of the challenges in the CJS in the field of forensic psychology. Critical elements of general psychotherapy identified from this study were transparency and confidentiality. However, forensic psychologists working in correctional facilities reported challenges in working within their scope of practice, informed consent issues, and the limits of medical confidentiality. Transparent communication with representatives from the CJS and the inmates was crucial in navigating these challenges.
