Evolution of Applied Behavior Analysis
Discussion
Please complete your assigned readings and respond to the following:
How has the field of Applied Behavior Analysis evolved from the 1980s to now?
What positive changes have occurred and what do you think might have been the catalyst for that change?
In “A Perspective on Today’s ABA,” Dr. Hanley includes four subheadings “Learn by Listening,” “Learn by Creating Joy,” “Learn by Empowering,” and “Learn while Teaching.” Select one of these subheadings, discuss what this means to you, and what this might look like in practice with clients.
Discuss one of the seven dimensions of applied behavior analysis (beginning on page 16 in Chapter 1 of your text, Applied Behavior Analysis) and describe why it is important to the field.

The applied behavior analysis (ABA) field has evolved in different dimensions from the 1980s to now. There has been an upsurge in the application of behavioral research in clinical practice, focusing on people struggling with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This is a positive change catalyzed by the need to improve the efficacy of holistic behavioral measures for autistic individuals. Functional analyses have also developed and evolved significantly over the past four decades. The need to establish conditions that augment the potential for problem behaviors and thus inform interventions involving function-driven replacement behavior has been the driving force behind these positive changes. Teaching social behavior to autistic individuals is another behavioral intervention advancement in the field
