In this assignment, you will compose your personal philosophy of education. As an academic paper, it is to be supported by the body of knowledge in the field, which is to include references to the literature from educational theory, philosophy, and research. This paper is to be treated as a position statement, a persuasive paper. The aim of the paper focuses on education in general and does not attempt to address specific educational subjects or grade levels. Consider this a “living document” and write it according to your philosophy as of today. As you gain teaching experience, your philosophy may change. Thus, you will want to keep this paper and update it throughout your teaching career to continue to be current, reflecting your philosophy of education as it will be then. INSTRUCTIONS  You will compose a 3-4 page paper; this length requirement does not include the title page, abstract, or references.  The paper must contain the following elements: o Title Page  Consider the title of your paper to be your motto, slogan, or bumper- sticker version of your philosophy. It should be clear enough to give the reader some idea of what you believe about the purpose of education.  If using portions of content from previous course papers, avoid self- plagiarism concerns by inserting a statement in a distinguishable font on the title page such as this: “Portions of this paper were drawn from a previous work submitted in EDUC ****.” o Abstract o Introduction  The introductory paragraph should build from the purpose for education declared in the motto or slogan used in the title. The introduction should bring the title of the work to life. The paragraph should conclude with a thesis statement that sums the purpose, outcomes, goals, or impact of education declared in the title of the paper. o Philosophy of Schools & Learning  This section should flow smoothly from the thesis statement that ended the introduction and should continue to focus on the “why” of education—the long-range impact you believe schools and learning should have on individuals and society. Save the “how” of education for the next section.  Begin this section with a statement regarding the purpose of school as an institution for learning. How does having school help education fulfill the purpose just stated in the introduction? EDUC 360 Page 2 of 2  The rest of this section builds off of your view as to the nature of the learner. What is the basic nature of the learner? Based on the nature of the learner, to what learning theories do you embrace and why? Don’t try to cover everything; just identify one or two key theories that might illustrate your own beliefs about the purpose of schools and learning. o Instructional Practice  This section should flow smoothly from the previous one by aligning teaching practices with the nature of the learner and learning theories stated in the previous section. This is the “how” part of education.  What instructional strategies or methods will you tend to use most frequently? Why? o Teacher-Learner Relationships  What is the role of the learner in the learning process?  What is the role of the teacher in the learning process?  How should they relate to each other and why? o Diversity  What diversity factors need to be taken into account by the teacher?  How will factors of student diversity impact your lesson design and instruction? o Conclusion o Reference Page  The paper should be composed using current APA format.  A minimum of four scholarly academic sources is required to be used in addition to the Bible in citations and references. Your academic sources must be from the fields of educational theory, philosophy, and research. Be sure to include one source for each of the following source types: book, academic journal, and online source.
