Art therapy can stimulate creativity, support treatment goals, and promote self-care and resilience among individuals experiencing a crisis. In this course project, you will explore and write about the functions of art therapy in crisis situations and consider how interacting with art can assist human services professionals in reducing stress and enhancing their own well-being. You will also apply your knowledge of art therapy to specific crisis events and have the opportunity to engage in self-care activities connected to art and leisure. First, begin by reading Chapter 14 in the text (Crisis Assessment, Intervention, and Prevention) and examine the journal article entitled “Singing Away the Social Distancing Blues: Art Therapy in a Time of Coronavirus.” Then explore the websites for the American Art Therapy Association Links to an external site. and the Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens Links to an external site.. You will also want to select another peer-reviewed journal article on using art therapy in crisis situations. Next, take a field trip to the Cummer Museum (if possible). On the museum’s website, you will see that they offer free admission (Tuesdays through Fridays) for college students and provide other opportunities for free admission on the weekends. When you visit, you will select three of your favorite works of art in the collection. As you write about your experience at the museum, provide a detailed description of each painting/art piece you selected. Then reflect on why you made this selection, how the visit to the museum and the works of art made you feel, and how engaging with this art could potentially enhance individuals’ feelings of wellness. Feel free to include pictures of the three pieces of art you selected. If you cannot visit the Cummer Museum in person, you can complete this portion of the project by selecting three pieces of art online. You can find the permanent collection on the Cummer Museum website or at another local museum. If applicable, discuss how you viewed the Cummer museum’s permanent art collection online or visited another local museum to complete this project, provide detailed descriptions of the art pieces, and reflect on your feelings about the artwork. Finally, incorporate the resources you explored (i.e., your text, both journal articles, and websites) into your paper. Discuss why self-care is important, the potential personal limitations you might encounter as a crisis responder concerning self-care, and how engaging with art as a human services professional can aid in achieving therapeutic and self-care goals. You will also address how art therapy can be used with individuals experiencing a crisis and applied to specific crisis situations. There are aspects and feelings that the specific works of art give to a person that may help in the experience of stabilizing, thinking, and relating, which are crucial during a crisis. This essay, regarding two paintings, shows how utilizing various artistic topics and approaches can help overcome a dreadful disease and solicit psychological recovery for the person undergoing therapy and other people. This now becomes an essential intervention style in responding to a person's emotional, psychological, and social support needs in a crisis. In this essay, two chosen paintings will be analyzed with consideration of art therapy as relevant in crisis intervention, with the following selected paintings as references: Guigou's (1867) “The Mouth of the Lourmarin River” and Charvot’s (1889) View of Rue El-Alfahouine—in the context of art therapy, highlighting their relevance in supporting emotional recovery during crises. Another advantage of using the museum's website is that I saw higher-resolution images of each work and brief information on the artists, their biographies, and the processes they employed. This is why this virtual opportunity, where I could study the chosen artworks with their reflective, uninterrupted, and deep nursing approach, let me think about how the mood and elements of every painting correspond to my therapeutic ideas. Many of Guigou's works have tranquil scenes, and The Mouth of the Lourmarin River depicts a stream, green scenery, and Rocky Mountains. Therefore, the lack of movement can contribute to the notion of trust and security which is often required during therapy in cases of grief, traumatic experiences, and others. When people are full of difficult emotions, such images can give them a break and help them come back to the calming world of nature, which can be helpful as a therapeutic intervention. The gentle play of lights and shades in the painting provides the kind of warmth that reflects the calmness and timeless beauty of nature. Also, as the running water is usually symbolic of letting out emotions and bringing continuous flow, the water here gently flowing also symbolically suggests a healthy process of letting go and moving on. Furthermore, large rock formations in the background, regardless of how massive, are set up to be unattainable and unmovable, indicating stability and invincibility, all occurring in an environment of calmness, which in a grieving process is very comforting. In contrast, Charvot’s View of Rue El-Alfahouine depicted the middle of the emergent North African city where citizens are shown undertaking their activities.
