Blood is the medium that reflects the acid-base balance in the body. The blood can be acidic or basic, based on the significant regulators of blood pH, including the lungs and the kidneys. Other regulators include the buffer systems, such as the protein-proton binding, bicarbonate-carbonate system, and phosphoric acid systems CITATION Lew20 \l 13321 (Lewis, 2020).
Generally, the pH scale has a range of 0 to 14. Zero, being the most acidic, and 14, is the most basic. Typically, blood pH is at 7.35 to 7.45, which means that it is quite basic. As mentioned, the lungs and kidneys maintain the balance in blood pH. The lungs control this range via the expulsion of carbon dioxide outside the body through the airways via exhalation. Carbon dioxide is slightly acidic. It is produced continuously as the byproduct of metabolism necessary for adenosine triphosphate production, which is needed by the body to produce energy. Its consistent production results in an increase in blood acidity. Thus, the lungs compensate by releasing it. The brain is responsible for detecting pH imbalances in the body and releases a signal to stimulate the ventilation center to increase or decrease the breathing rate. On the other hand, the kidneys regulate acid-base balance by excreting the surplus bases or acids. These organs can also set the amount to be excreted to allow for recovery and adjustments in pH disruptions. Any discrepancies between these organs can ...
