Health information systems are systems designed to manage healthcare data. Health information systems include electronic health records, electronic medical records, master patient index (MPI), remote patient monitoring (RPM), clinical decision support (CDS), patient portals, and practice management software. A health information system (HIS) collects, stores, manages and transmits electronic medical records (Zhang et al., 2015). Health information systems are also used to handle data being used by healthcare organizations and providers. Healthcare data involving providers and healthcare organizations are used to inform research, influence decision-making, and improve patient outcomes.
Health information systems have significant benefits for providers and patients. Among providers, the main advantage of health information systems is efficiency in data management. The healthcare industry is constantly producing data, which has to be gathered, compiled, and analyzed to manage population health (Zhang et al., 2015). Data analytics helps to achieve this in addition to improving patient care. Healthcare information systems also foster collaborative care. Some patients need treatment from different providers. Healthcare information systems enable this through health information exchanges (HIEs) (Zhang et al., 2015).
Health information systems play a significant role in the healthcare industry. They aid in the coordination and organization of treatment processes (Hsiao et al., 2015). HIS is technologically driven, making the process of sharing healthcare information between providers and organizations easy. Health information systems also help improve patient safety. With access to patient data, providers and health organizations can share relevant information across multiple databases, improving patient safety. Doctors today can even get a notification when there is an issue with a patient's health (Hsiao et al., 2015).
