Health Information Systems (HISs) are systems designed to manage and protect healthcare data. HISs collect, store, and transmit electronic medical records (EMRs). HISs may also be used to manage healthcare providers and institutions (Andargoli et al., 2017). HISs help to improve patient outcomes, influence policy, and decision-making and inform research. Examples of HISs include EMR, Electronic Health Record (EHR), Master Patient Index (MPI), patient portals, Remote Patient Monitoring (RPM), Clinical Decision Support (CDS), and practice management software (Andargoli et al., 2017).
HISs have the desired effect on data management and efficiency. It helps healthcare providers gather, compile, and analyze health data (Rainer et al., 2020). In turn, this helps in the management of population health and the reduction of healthcare costs. Another benefit to HIS is that it enhances collaborative care. HIS enables health information exchanges (HIEs). HIEs come in handy because some patients often need treatment from different medical professionals. Finally, there is the added benefit of cost control. Using digital networks, HISs create efficiencies and cost savings (Rainer et al., 2020).
HISs play an important role in the healthcare sector. The first role of HISs is to organize and coordinate treatment processes (Hsiao et al., 2015). Through HISs, patients can get coordinated treatment from their different healthcare providers. Coordinated treatment is especially important among patients whose diagnoses require cross-specialty treatment. The second role of HISs is that it improves patient safety. Through HISs, healthcare providers get easy access to patient data, which they can share across several databases (Hsiao et al., 2015). This enables practitioners and providers to get alerts whenever there is an issue with a patient's health. For instance, through HIS, a healthcare provider can be notified of the harmful effects a patient may experience from taking a particular medicine without it being prescribed.
