For long, physical education and exercise has been part of the school curriculum, besides other academic intensive subjects like sciences, humanities and mathematics. In the sense of dispensing knowledge and skills to the youth for enlightenment and career preparedness, physical education has always lagged behind the other subjects in the degree of prominence. This has led to many people suggesting that more time should be dedicated on more ‘useful` subjects like the sciences and mathematics and less time on physical exercise. Scraping of physical exercise has even been suggested. This paper is an opinion on the issue.
Besides physical education being a route to achieving other career options in sports, it has been known to be a source of good health, education for leisure, good vocational preparation and enabling the youth to prepare for initiation into the mainstream culture that favors healthy people. The subjects that are suggested to replace physical exercise like mathematics and sciences are mostly theoretical or performed in laboratories. They contain little or no content on physical education and exercise. These subjects require that learners be attentive and concentrate, to receive the most out of the lectures, and to be able to understand what is being taught. Without physical health and fitness, it is not easy to attain full concentration that is required for such mentally intensive subjects. Promotion of physical healthiness is paramount as it is tied to other bodily functions.
