Activity 1
1 List the four different scoring options for a CBM written expression probe.
The four scoring options for the CBM written expression probe are:
Number of words written
Number of letters written
Number of words accurately spelled
Number of writing units set in the proper sequence.
2 When implementing a writing probe, how many minutes is the student given to write the story?
When implementing a writing probe, students have a total of 4 minutes. The examiner provides a lined composition sheet with a story starter sentence. The students have 1 minute to think and 3 minutes to write the short story.
3 How many spelling words should be contained on a CBM probe for students in grades 4 - 8?
Spelling words on the CBM probe for students in grades 4-8 contain 17 words, and the examiners announce each new word after every 7 seconds.
4 Explain the difference between a single-skill and a multiple-skill math probe. What kinds of problems might be included in each?
Single-skill math probes contain questions with similar math problems. The probe focuses on evaluating a single skill. For example, if it is an addition, a single skill probe will contain various questions assessing addition. On the other hand, a multi-skill math probe tests different mathematical skills within the same test. For example, a math probe may contain addition, division, subtraction, and multiplication.
5 What is one way to create a measurement pool for a reading fluency probe?
Use of Basal Series.
If the classroom bases its reading program on the basal reading system, the teacher can treat the total passages within the basal text as a measurement tool (Allen, 2022). The teacher can select any passage from the designated basal text when creating probes.
6 When assessing the fluency skills of 1st-grade and 2nd-grade students placed in a basal reading series, how many passages should be selected, and how many words should be contained within each passage?
An instructor selects three passages randomly from the basal reading series. Each passage should contain 150 words long when assessing 1st and 2nd-grade students.
7 What elements of CBM probes are standardized?
