Introduction to Design of Experiments
Assignment: Using General Motors Company (GM), find a situation in which DOE could be used. Determine which DOE situation type it is. Assignment Expectations: Describe the situation and discuss how DOE could be used to improve it or solve it. State your position about which DOE situation this is and support your position. The paper should be two to three pages. Be sure to include references. Helpful Information: This website provides an overview of DOE: NIST (2006).Engineering Statistics Handbook retrieved on 3/2/2012, from http://www(dot)itl(dot)nist(dot)gov/div898/handbook/pri/section1/pri11.htm As you can see, there are interactions among the variables, and that is an important feature of DOE. One way to design and conduct experiments is to vary one factor at a time (OFAT) while holding the others constant. Read the following paper, starting on page 7, with the section "Economic Trade Off". Then read the final two sections, Interactions and Summary. This will provide a detailed explanation of Interactions and why OFAT is not a good method: There are different reasons and different ways to use DOE, since it is a multi-purpose tool. This section of the online Engineering Statistics handbook provides some examples of different uses of DOE. In General Motors Company (GM), just like any other company, profitability is essential to the sustainability of the company. It is essential that the company remains capable of churning profits, preferably increasing, every financial year. In order for this goal to be realized, the human workforce responsible for carrying out the daily activities at the company must work at its optimum. The ability to remain consistent is a key factor that heavily influences the ability of GM to achieve its financial, as well as other goals. Every company experiences a ‘stagnation’ phase. This is a phase where the company is neither improving nor declining, but is instead stagnant. While this is not necessarily bad, it may prove harmful to the success of the company in the long term. Should a company fail to overcome this plateau phase, it runs the risk of collapse. The only way such a phase can be overcome is by improving the key areas of the company, one of which is employee efficiency.
The ability of employees to be efficient at what they do is essential to the success of any company. This is because by improving employee efficiency, their work rate improves as well, resulting in more work done and more profits. At present, GM should focus in improving its employee efficiency and work rate. Only by improving this can it churn out more profits-something the investors will definitely enjoy. By conducting experiments to determine the key factors that affect employee efficiency and work rate, GM can mitigate these factors to yield improved results. Addressing the fac...
