Qualities of a good leader
A leader is a person who guides and influences a group of people in accomplishing certain objectives. A leader should therefore be of such qualities that make them effective in achieving the goals set by the group or organization they are leading. There are more than 50 qualities that make a leader stand out but only three are believed to be most important. This will be discussed in this term paper.
According to Winston Churchill, Courage is considered the foremost virtues upon which many other qualities of a good leader depend on (Bennis 1994). A courageous leader is always ready to take risks in pursuit of the goals they have set to achieve. The drive to achieve makes the leader work for it courageously rather than sitting and hopping for it to happen.
The strong guiding principles that one never wants to compromise makes one a leader of integrity. With integrity comes truthfulness and honesty both of which are core values of leadership. Integrity cannot be seen directly but it`s rather reflected in ones attitudes, thinking and their actions as a leader. Honesty elevates leader for better assessment and growth.
Humility in leadership is about recognition of the values of people or organization that one leads. This comes about through self-awareness and self-confidence .At the same time the leader doesn`t feel threatened; the humility in them makes them admit and acknowledge their mistakes. A good leader is accountable for all their actions. Thereby one gathers the necessary information even from their juniors to achieve the best results. Larry Bossidy in his book, Execution, laments that ‘containing your ego as a leader makes you realize your problem` (Bennis 1994).
