The body mass index (BMI) is a weight-for-height ratio and is used to determine whether a person has a healthy weight. BMI is calculated using one's weight and height. As per the CDC (2022), the formula for calculating BMI is weight (lb) / [height (in)]2 x 703. In this sense, the weight is divided by height squared and then multiplied by 703.
Question 2
There are some body types that BMI could provide inaccurate estimates for. One such body type is a person with a lot of muscle. For such a body type, the BMI may be above the healthy range but the person may be healthy. Therefore, while BMI may provide accurate estimates for many bodies, there are some in which the results by be inaccurate.
Question 3
A regular exercise program offers significant benefits to both women and women. There are several physiological ways through which women can benefit from a regular exercise program. First, a regular exercise program reduces the risk of developing serious conditions such as stroke, coronary heart disease, and cancers of the breast, colon, and lung. It is important to recognize that these are some of the major causes of death in the US. Second, such a program can improve muscle strength, aerobic capacity, and muscle endurance, which can help one engage in more physical activity, consequently improving their health.
Third, a regular exercise program reduces one’s risk of developing type 2 diabetes, depression, and osteoporosis. Type 2 diabetes is a major public health concern and regular exercise can be instrumental in addressing it. Depression and osteoporosis are also key conditions that negatively impact the lives of women. Fourth, such a program can also help maintain healthy joints, bones, and muscles.
