Another part of the research process includes the sampling method—how researchers obtain the data they need for their research, and measurement—how the understanding of a concept is applied. Measurement includes what variables researchers will use to measure the data. For example, if someone says, “It's warm outside today,” the word “warm” may have a different meaning for different people. If they made the statement, “It's 88 degrees outside with 55% relative humidity,” more specific information is available to create an understanding related to the temperature and humidity. Temperature and humidity might be considered variables.
As you have learned during previous weeks of this course, much of the current research has been biased with sample populations which are predominantly Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, Democratic (WEIRD). It is important, therefore, to utilize an anti-oppressive lens as you seek to challenge and dismantle systems of oppression and marginalization. As you consider study variables, you would also want to incorporate theories of power, privilege, and relationships that explain how oppression operates at different levels and how it affects different groups of people based on race, class, gender, sexuality, disability, et cetera (Rogers, 2011). Anti-oppressive research practice often involves drawing a study sample from marginalized or oppressed populations and measuring study variables that can help to shed light on the experiences and perspectives of these groups. By centering the voices and experiences of marginalized individuals and communities, anti-oppressive research can promote social justice and equity.

The Separation of Black Families in the Child Welfare System
Issue Description
A key challenge facing Black families in America is the separation of children from their parents. Given the role of parental nurturing, care, and love during childhood in impacting one's future success, it is imperative that the child welfare system limits family interference. The disproportionate involvement of Black children in the welfare system compared to white children is an unfortunate fact that needs to be changed urgently. As informed by Dettlaff et al. (2020), the systemic over-involvement and over-surveillance of Black families and children by the welfare system harm them disproportionately. In this sense, by perpetuating the racial inequities facing Black families, the child welfare system is itself a source of oppression for the community.
A case example of oppression from the welfare system is that of Tyron Deener and his partner Syesha Mercado, a Black couple who lost their two children to the system in 2021 (Roberts, 2022). After the couple took their 13-month-old son to a hospital to receive medical care, citing malnutrition, the staff reported to the Department of Children and Families, who took the child away from his parents. With the parents facing the challenge of transitioning the child to solid foods from breastfeeding, they had taken the child to the hospital, concerned he was experiencing dehydration, only to have him taken away from them. Six months later, the couple were blessed with a daughter, who was detained alongside the parents immediately after she was born. Luckily, during the arrest, Tyron Deener live-streamed the incident, which helped lawyers facilitate a reunion with their daughter nine days later as they continued to fight for custody of their son. Such discriminatory treatment of back families in the child welfare system is common and requires an urgent solution.
Rationale for Topic Selection
I selected the topic because it is one of the challenges I regularly see in my community. It hurts to see many Black families separated because of a system that racially discriminates against them. With statistics clearly showing the disproportionate contact of Black children with the system, it means that many Black children are separated from their families, which denies them the parental love and care necessary for normal development. Given that involvement with the child system exposes them to abuse, neglect, and unwelcome life outcomes, racial inequities in the welfare system must be addressed urgently. In essence, this is a problem I care about, and I want to be part of the solution to address it.
Positionality Reflection
To me, anti-racist research means acknowledging the impact systemic racism has had on research frameworks and practices targeted at oppressed groups and communities. It also means incorporating in research the perspectives of individuals whose ideas have been traditionally ignored. Given that publishers and researchers have been white traditionally, it is important not to continue research practices that perpetuate racism. As a Black female social worker, I may hold assumptions that determine the direction of research. For example, the experiences my ancestors went through during slavery and the lasting impact it has had on our people may influence how I articulate my ideas. Furthermore, as an insider, detaching myself from Black cultural experience to study it without bias can be challenging. Nonetheless, through continuous reflection, I intend to maintain objectivity.
