Proposed Approaches
a. Proposed Research Design
This study will apply a mixed-methods design to investigate the impact of SDL skills on the student's academic performance of undergraduate students across different faculties and departments of higher education. Therefore, the research will provide quantified and qualitative data through which a comprehensive analysis of the relationship between SDL and academic outcomes will be obtained. The SDLRS will be implemented in this quantitative section related to questionnaires, while data on educational performance will be gathered through administering SDLRS implementation. The qualitative part will consist of semi-structured interviews with a sample of students to explore the students' experience with the SDL strategies.
b. Intended Participants (Sample)
The participants in this study are full-time undergraduate students studying three different disciplines: engineering, business administration, and communication arts. The partaking institution is a large university, and the targeted sample size is 300 students. Email invites, and announcements sent to the entire institution will be used for recruitment. The requirements for inclusion include ongoing enrollment in one of the specified fields of study and successful completion of a minimum of one semester of courses in that field.
c. Suggested Materials and Apparatus
Data sources for the quantitative part would be the SDLRS to evaluate SDL abilities and students' academic records from the university to attain grades and standardized test scores. The SDLRS is a validated instrument of self-reporting items that establish the students' readiness for self-directed learning. An interview guide will be developed to facilitate in-depth discussions. Interview data shall be recorded using an audio recording device and later transcribed to aid the analysis.
d. Procedural Description
The SDLRS will be administered to the subjects online via a secure survey platform. After the participant's approval, academic performance data and semester results will be requested from the university records. In addition, thirty students, ten from each subject, will participate in semi-structured interviews. Both in-person and video conference interviews will take place in a private setting, with each interview anticipated to last around 45 minutes. Interview data will be transcribed and analyzed to identify themes relevant to SDL experiences across disciplines.
Proposed Results
a. Data Analysis
The core statistical analysis is multiple regression, which examines the relationship between SDL abilities (independent variable) and academic performance (dependent variable) while controlling for discipline. It will show to what extent SDL abilities predict academic outcomes when considering a variation between disciplines. ANOVA will also be applied to all mean SDL scores and academic performance among the three disciplines. Correlations will also be made to present the strengths and directions of the relationship between SDL skills and academic performance in the disciplines. Descriptive statistics will also provide an overview of the distribution and central tendencies for SDL results and ed...
