Comprehensive Review of Recent Studies on the Efficacy and Safety of Traditional Chinese Medicine Interventions for Insomnia Name Institution Course Instructor Date Comprehensive Review of Recent Studies on the Efficacy and Safety of Traditional Chinese Medicine Interventions for Insomnia Introduction Over the years, insomnia has remained a sleep disorder that has affected a vast number of people around the world. Even though different symptoms are associated with insomnia, the common ones include a person struggling to fall asleep, having poor sleep quality after falling asleep, and having regular nocturnal awakenings. Some of the conventional treatments used, such as pharmacological agents and cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), have some weaknesses, such as dependency issues and side effects. These weaknesses have led Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) to secure huge attention where it is used as both a complementary and integrative approach. TCM is currently addressing insomnia through rebalancing the current internal disharmony through applying individualized diagnoses and treatment plans. Some of the treatment plans include herbal Medicine, acupuncture, and lifestyle recommendations. This review investigates the safety and efficacy of TCM interventions for insomnia through the evaluation of case studies, complementary research such as systematic reviews, and clinical trials, while contextualizing the findings within the broader framework of modern healthcare. TCM Differential Diagnosis of Insomnia Within the TCM, insomnia is not perceived as a standalone disease since it is viewed as an underlying imbalance. TCM differential diagnosis includes the process of identifying the root cause according to the pattern differentiation (Xu et al., 2021). There are varying TCM syndromes that are frequently associated with insomnia. One of the syndromes is the heart and spleen deficiency. It is usually evident through palpitations, poor memory, fatigue, and disturbed sleep. These characteristics usually result from overwork or overthinking. The other syndrome is disharmony between the kidney and the heart. This is evident through tinnitus, restlessness, red tongue with little coating, and night sweats. The third syndrome is the Liver Qi Stagnation, which later changes into fire. This condition is composed of headaches, irritability, and a bitter taste in the mouth. The fourth syndrome is the Phlegm-heat that harasses the mind. Insomnia is usually caused by chest oppression, dizziness, and greasy tongue coating. The other common syndrome is Yin Deficiency, which has empty heat. This syndrome consists of dry mouth, night sweats, and five-center heat (Maciocia, 2015). The last syndrome is stomach disharmony and food retention. This is where a person experiences insomnia resulting from heavy meals, acid regurgitation, or belching. Every pattern guides the selection of herbal formulas and acupuncture points. For instance, kidney and heart disharmony is likely to be treated with the Tian Wang Bu Xin Dan formulae, while the Liver Fire rising is treated with the Long Dan Xie Gan Tang. Research Findings: Efficacy and Safety of TCM for Insomnia Acupuncture Different studies have confirmed that acupuncture has efficacy in boosting sleep quality, duration, and latency. Research conducted on sleep medicine reviews found that acupuncture had a greater impact than pharmacological and placebo treatments in boosting sleep efficiency and reducing wake time after sleep onset (Lu et al., 2024). Some of the mechanisms applied are the neurotransmitter modulation, such as melatonin and serotonin, which regulate the sleep-wake cycles. The double-blind RCT, which was performed in China, highlighted that whenever acupuncture is used together with Suan Zao Ren Tang, which is a commonly applied herbal formula, it has superior outcomes when compared to zolpidem. The main reason is that it had lower relapse rates and fewer adverse effects after discontinuing the treatment. Herbal Medicine Herbal prescriptions have been personalized based...
