Emergency rooms are critical in the healthcare system, specifically during urgent and life-threatening cases. Emergency rooms have high pressure due to the sensitivity of the services provided. One of the vital things in this field is effective communication. Communication is not just considered necessary but also lifesaving. Despite the significant adoption of technology in the healthcare sector, ERs in the United States still struggle with communication failures that bring about medical errors, staff burnout, and patient dissatisfaction. In the Emergency Rooms, the most common communication issue is the breakdown in information exchange brought about by information fatigue and time constraints. These are the significant factors that cause miscommunication between the care providers, which delays treatment, decreases the quality of care, and increases risks. For this Issue, the most effective solution is implementing integrated communication systems and uniform handoff protocols that simplify information flow and decrease errors.
The Issue: Communication Breakdown in Emergency Rooms
One of the main issues in the emergency room is that communication mostly breaks down because of the overwhelming amount of patient information that needs to be processed under time pressure. In most cases, communication failures in Emergency Departments are brought about by serious medical errors. Staff in this department are expected to swiftly evaluate, diagnose, and provide intervention for the patients while at the same time managing lab results, imaging reports, medication orders, and communication with other departments. In such a setting with so much chaos, even a small failure in communication, like forgetting to note the medication dosage or the patient's allergy, can have harmful outcomes. One of the main challenges facing the emergency department is its unpredictable and fast-paced nature. Compared to other departments where a patient can make an appointment with the caregivers, they must respond to patients with a wide range of urgent needs in the emergency setting. Traditional communication, such as handwritten notes or verbal updates, is ineffective for this setting. When a caregiver misses a message or delays a response, it might bring about misdiagnosis or delayed intervention. According to Toren et al. (2022), inconsistent communication when handing off patients, specifically in the emergency department, confuses and increases the risk of clinical errors.
