Research Paper Instructions:
I will upload instructions in documents. The PICO question for this paper is: “In people with schizophrenia, how effective is mindfulness in lowering depression in those who practice it compared to those who do not?” I will also upload the article used for the PICO question which is 1 out of the 4 required sources.

Schizophrenia: Lowering Depression through Mindfulness Author’s Name The Institutional Affiliation Course Number and Name The Instructor Assignment Due Date Schizophrenia: Lowering Depression through Mindfulness This clinical research aims to address the PICO question, “In people with schizophrenia, how effective is mindfulness in lowering depression in those who practice it compared to those who do not?” Schizophrenia is a leading mental disease worldwide due to limited awareness, weak preventive measures, and delayed healthcare interventions (WHO, 2022). Statistically, 24 million people globally are diagnosed with schizophrenia, which is an extreme consequence of other mental conditions such as major depressive disorder (MDD), chronic stress, and severe anxiety. Schizophrenia exposes patients to physical injuries, cardiovascular conditions, and metabolic disorders. As a result, healthcare insights argue that 2 out of 3 people in the general population experience premature deaths due to schizophrenia (WHO, 2022). Schizophrenia increases the economic burden on global economies due to annual spending of $251.9 billion on treatment plans, including direct and indirect costs, in the United States of America (US). Unfortunately, 31.3% of schizophrenia patients worldwide receive adequate health treatments and quality care. Insights confirm that mental health institutions place more emphasis on curing stress and MDD conditions instead of schizophrenia due to resource constraints and infrequent cases patients report (WHO, 2022). Hence, this research will explore mindfulness-based interventions (MBI) for treating schizophrenia in affordable, accessible, practical conditions. Research Article Summary I select the article published by Rayan (2025), exploring trait mindfulness and depression severity among people with schizophrenia. Mindfulness, depression, and schizophrenia are three essential keywords that caught my attention towards the article’s critical assessment. Rayan (2025) used a ‘quantitative correlational design’ to study 184 outpatients diagnosed with schizophrenia in Jordan, testing mindfulness in addressing depressive conditions to reduce schizophrenia episodes. The study has three specific findings relevant to my proposed PICO question: * The findings confirm that patients with mental conditions such as depression and schizophrenia experience moderate discrimination, which reduces motivation and increases breakdown episodes. The moderate discrimination made depressive conditions a clinical concern for patients in the long run (Rayan, 2025). * The study explored that depression was a consequence of demographic factors and people’s stigma, which accelerated physical pain and demotivation in schizophrenia patients. However, mindfulness was a significant approach for patients with mental conditions to cope with depression under social and healthcare disadvantages (Rayan, 2025). * The results confirm that demographic factors contribute 37% and public stigma increases 14% in depression, followed by mindfulness, which is a preventive measure by reducing 15% mental conditions among Jordanian patients. The above findings are relevant to the proposed PICO question by identifying mindfulness as a critical measure to treat schizophrenia patients under social and clinical constraints. Research Variables A study conducted by Rayan (2025) has the following essential variables: * Trait Mindfulness: This is the first independent variable of the study, having an interval nature. Mindfulness explains the positive attitude and resilience that schizophrenic patients show towards social discrimination and care disparities to prevent depression. The researcher used the ‘Mindful Attention Awareness Scale (MAAS)’ to measure the impact of this variable on patients with mental disorders, making it an interval. * Perceived Public Stigma: This is the second independent variable of the study, also having an interval nature. Perceived public stigma explains the dis...
