There are several learning theories on which to ground appropriate teaching methods in nursing education. Behavioral Learning Theory, Cognitive Learning Theory, Social Learning Theory, Andragogy, and Adult Learning Theory each enrich the student's clinical skills, critical thinking, collaboration, and self-directed learning development. Integrating the theories will provide the learner with a holistic learning environment encompassing the nursing students' technical competence and professional maturation.
Method for Incorporation into an Educational Activity
Behavioral Learning Theory
Method: Simulation-Based Skill Practice with Positive Reinforcement
The concepts of behavioral learning theory can also be used for nursing education by skill practice in the lab using mannequins or patients through simulation. The nursing students must practice simulations in medication administration, vital signs, and CPR. According to Ross (2021), positive reinforcement is one of the significant principles of the behavioral learning theory that will engage an educator in immediate praise for good behavior. For instance, when the student correctly injects, the instructor reinforces that behavior by saying, "Excellent! You kept your technique appropriate through the entire procedure." The reinforcement could also come as granting points toward certification or skill mastery. Such reinforcement ensures that students establish learned habits by repeating the desired behavior via operant conditioning. Rewarding correct behaviors aligns learning with behavioral theory to habituate learning and master clinical skills.
Cognitive Learning Theory
Method: Problem-Based Learning (PBL) in Case Studies
According to Kirch and Sadofsky (2021), the cognitive learning theory can also be included in the class environment using case studies and PBL. In this methodology, the students get to present a diagnosis for a patient who has been suffering from a chronic disease like diabetes, suggest treatment measures, and forecast the results with the use of their knowledge. Students critically analyze the case, discuss it, and solve it in groups. Bandura's modeling method is used in this observational learning methodology. Students observe and then imitate others (Mukhalalati et al., 2022). As observers reflect on what they see and how they can use these behaviors, the peer feedback session increases their sense of self-efficacy. Role-play reinforces learning through vicarious reinforcement. Students can role-play challenging patient scenarios to understand how their peer handles them and then apply that behavior in the clinical setting. Adult Learning Theory
Method: Self-Directed Learning Projects
Many self-directed learning projects allow the adult learner to apply andragogy. The student can choose a topic relevant to their current career interest, such as community health nursing, patient safety, or advanced clinical skills (Mukhalalati & Taylor, 2019). In developing the learning plan, the student identifies resources they will utilize, objectives, strategies/methods, and timelines. For instance, a student may investigate how cultural competence impacts the care provided to diverse populations. Here, the educator guides and facilitates while the student leads the learning. The student may research, attend workshops, seek out expert mentorship, or even create educational materials to share. This activity promotes self-direction, relevance, and problem-centred learning in the adult learning theory. This method answers the concept that adult learners are self-directed and have experiences they can draw upon (Mukhalalati & Taylor, 2019). Because the learning activities can be associated with the student's nursing practice, they enhance critical thinking and application.
