Non-traditional healthcare practices are also known as complementary or alternative medicine. They encompass a wide range of medical modalities, from antique Eastern practices of Tai Chi and acupuncture to chiropractic manipulation, Reiki, herbal medicine, and more. The use of nontraditional healthcare practices is rising across the United States (U.S.) and around the globe. Many healthcare practitioners are embracing the advantageous aspects of nontraditional healthcare practices via integrative medicine in order to achieve optimal patient care outcomes. In addition, significant trials trying to solidify evidence for the anecdotal merits of nontraditional medicine are rising in popularity. This paper discusses nontraditional healthcare practices in three distinct cultures and their importance in offering holistic and quality care. It also identifies nontraditional healthcare options in my locality as well as the reasons for their rising popularity.

Finnish nontraditional healthcare practice typically entails sauna bathing. This is a traditional practice that is anchored in the Finnish culture and has been traditionally used for relaxation, wellness, and leisure. Its application has also spread to other Nordic countries. The standard hot and dry sauna involves high temperatures (80-100oC), dry air with some level of humidity varying from ten to twenty percent, and good ventilation. Sauna sessions typically entail brief stays of five to twenty minutes within the sauna compartment and incorporate cooling-off session intervals where the individual takes cold showers or swims (Kunutsor & Laukkanen, 2023). Finish culture believes that the widespread application of saunas significantly helps people with a plethora of ailments because it removes body toxins via sweat and heating the body.

Acupuncture practice believes that heath emanates from the alignment of qi (vital energy) and includes a yin or yang framework, which flows across physical worlds in their entirety. The theory of qi has five elements as the foundation, including metal, earth, fire, water, and wood. An excess or blockage of any of these elements disorients this important energy. Acupuncture is tailored to lower the excess or open the blockage of qi, which flows across particular channels in an individual’s body (Van-Hal et al., 2023). Health is achieved via a functional interconnectedness of wellness rather than the absence of an ailment.
