Leadership Self-Assessment
Nurses are tasked with the provision of evidence-based and personalized health care. The role of a master's-prepared nurse as a leader is fundamental to advancing healthcare delivery, promoting positive patient outcomes, and fostering a culture of excellence within the healthcare environment. At the organizational level, master’s prepared nurses possess a unique combination of valuable clinical expertise and leadership skills. Given their appreciation for evidence-based practice and vast experience in the nursing field, master’s prepared nurses collaborate with interprofessional teams and advocate for quality care and patient safety (Mlambo et al., 2021). The purpose of this paper is to discuss personal leadership experience, preferred leadership style, and relevance of the American Organization for Nursing Leadership (AONL) Nurse Leader Core Competencies.
Personal Leadership Experience
I have previously served as a leader in various formal positions in healthcare settings. These roles have included serving as a charge nurse, leading a team of nursing staff in a clinical unit, and participating in multiple committees focused on quality improvement and patient safety initiatives. I have been an effective leader during my tenure in those positions. As a team leader, I demonstrated good communication skills and often mediated between employees and the administration on unpopular decisions. For example, I convinced the hospital management to create a department for patient safety and employ a patient safety officer. As a charge nurse, I created a supportive environment where team members felt valued and empowered to contribute their ideas and concerns. The rationale for this self-assessment is based on the feedback I received from peers and supervisors who delegated their roles to me (Zarrin et al., 2023). I am confident that I am comfortable serving in leadership roles. I have a deep sense of responsibility and commitment to patient care and team development.
Leadership Style
The leadership style that aligns best with my philosophy and preferences is transformational leadership. Since childhood, I have been able to influence and motivate my friends toward a common goal. Transformational leadership is based on inspiring team members to perform to the best of their abilities (Specchia et al., 2021). In all those previous leadership roles, I emphasized the importance of a shared vision and created an inclusive culture that recognized the presence of every individual. The rationale for selecting transformational leadership is that it aligns with the core values of integrity and commitment to excellence. This leadership style has allowed me to engage and motivate diverse professional teams to deliver high-quality care. The leadership style that best suits my future practice as a master's-prepared nurse is a blend of transformational and servant leadership (Specchia et al., 2021). As a leader concerned about my team members, I will be better positioned for more success. I will address underlying factors that impede my team members from realizing their full potential. Empathy, active listening, and a commitment to serving others will complement my current transformational leadership skills.
Leadership Competencies
The AONL core competencies are the essential skills, knowledge, and abilities for effective nursing leadership. Nurses constitute the largest workforce population in healthcare; hence, their input in leadership is crucial. The Leader Within has five core domains: communication and relationship building, business skills and principles, knowledge of the healthcare environment, leadership, and professionalism.
