In the case of diabetes mellitus, self-management education is an important aspect in the control of the disease. This paper seeks to critically evaluate the quality, level, and usefulness of an EBP and a non-EBR article concerning self-management education in diabetes mellitus, following the Johns Hopkins Evidence-Based Practice (JHEBP) model, and to outline an appropriate EBP practice change.Will education on diabetes self-management reduce A1C and improve glycemic control in patients with diabetes as compared to no education on diabetes self-management? Evaluation of the Research Article Purpose of the Study In the case of the research study written by Maina, Kimani, and Mwaura in 2025, the authors sought to evaluate the level of efficiency in the application of a 12-month program of peer-led diabetes self-management education and support (DSMES) to adults with type 2 diabetes in Kenya. In the context of the global increase in the prevalence of diabetes, the authors of the study sought to discuss the issues affecting the population with the illness in low-resource countries, as well as the potential impact of peer-led education in the control of the illness in individuals with type 2 diabetes. Research Methodology The quasi-experimental design was used in this study, indicating that it is quantitative in nature in relation to an intervention study design. There were 132 participants in total, with an equal number in both control and intervention groups. DSMES was used as an intervention with participants receiving it twice a month for 12 months, while control participants received routine care and the outcome measures used were hemoglobin A1c, random blood glucose, blood pressure, and body mass index (Maina et al., 2025). Level of Evidence Based on the Johns Hopkins Evidence-Based Practice (JHEBP) model and the Appendix D Evidence Guide, it is clear that quasi-experimental studies are rated as "Level II" evidence, implying a very high degree of reliability with regards to the outcomes of the intervention. Data Analysis and Ethical Considerations The data was analyzed by employing t-tests and regression tests in order to determine the differences in the measurements before and after the interventions. The study found that there was an improvement in HbA1c levels in the study group compared with the control group (7.36% vs. 8.95%, p < .001) and RBG levels in the study group compared with the control group (7.56 vs. 9.22 mmol/L; p = .008).
