Burnout is an issue that affects patient outcomes, retention of personnel, and the healthcare system in general. In the given assignment, the research problem that will be addressed is burnout among bedside nurses in a hospital, to be more specific, how emotional exhaustion affects job satisfaction and turnover intention. The topic is clinically relevant and narrow since the issue of burnout may negatively impact the health of nurses and patients. The next sections put into practice the research methods on this subject matter through finding a theory, literature reviews, research design choice and ethical concerns and implications to practice. Theory Selection Job Demands Resource (JD-R) Theory would be suitable for the research of nurse burnout. This theory suggests that burnout occurs when there are job demands and resources are not sufficient. Nurses work in high-demand settings and are characterized by high workloads, complicated patients, staffing shortages, and emotional labor. JD-R Theory was selected as it is a straightforward model that explains the relationships between stressors present in the workplace and the subsequent emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and low personal accomplishment, which are the primary dimensions of burnout. The theory is also applicable to the nursing setting since it recognizes that burnout may be counterbalanced by sufficient resources like support, staffing, training, and manageable workloads. Thus, the JD-R Theory offers a comprehensible means of studying the role of certain workplace conditions in nurse burnout and the possible ways to mitigate such conditions. According to Kurtzman et al., (2022), emotional exhaustion among nurses was higher during the time of staffing shortages. The research indicated that high job demands and scarce resources were more predictive of burnout, compared to personal traits. Dall’Ora et al. (2020) investigated the role of a shift length in burnout. Nurses who work more than 12-hour shifts experience much emotional exhaustion and reduced job satisfaction. Another observation made by the authors was that long shifts augmented turnover intention. The study by Molina-Praena et al. (2018) revealed that burnout and poor patient safety were considerably correlated. Nurses who were burned out were more likely to record near misses and were unable to perform their daily tasks. A systematic review conducted by Woo et al. (2020) also showed that younger nurses and new graduates were especially vulnerable to burnout. Factors such as low experience, ineffective mentoring and excessive unit stress levels contributed to the same. Mudallal et al. (2017) studied the topic of organizational support and presented the results that the burnout level varies among nurses based on the perception of their working environment as supportive. Protective factors included a supportive leader, open communication and the availability of the required resources.
