GAAP and Financial Statements
Financial statements are a mainstay accounting and financial function. Given the highly competitive nature of the modern global business environment, the financial statements are not only significant but also crucial in assessing the financial health of the company alongside its performance (Rejison, 3). For a publicly held company, it is especially important that these financial statements are prepared according to GAAP. GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) are accounting rules designed to ensure a firm’s financial statements are complete, consistent, and comparable (Fernando, 1). As such, GAAP gives firms credibility and boosts their trust in the financial markets. Investors are also keen on GAAP. The rationale is that investors may hesitate to invest or become reluctant to trust the information to them by public companies if such information is not prepared according to GAAP. Furthermore, the main idea of preparing financial statements is to communicate to shareholders and other relevant stakeholders on matters to do with the financial health and performance of the company. Besides, the company also needs these statements for reasons such decision-making and management, regulatory and tax compliance, and security financing. Therefore, the financial statements must be accurate, complete, and consistent to serve these purposes.
The process of preparing financial statements can vary depending on many factors and variable. However, this process can be broken down into eight sequential steps as follows.
Identifying and recording transactions
Transferring the information into the general ledger
Preparing the adjusted trial balance
Adjusting the journal entries
Preparing the adjusted trial balance
Generating financial statements (income statement, balance sheet, cash flow statement)
Closing the books
Preparing notes to the financial statements

Horizontal Analysis

Summary of Horizontal Analysis
The horizontal analysis depicts a contrasting picture between the two companies. Most notably, while Starbucks experienced a modest growth in revenues, it also recorded declining operating income. On the contrary, MacDonald’s exhibited a much stronger revenue growth coupled with a relatively stable profitability.
Vertical Analysis
The results of the vertical analysis are presented in Table 1 below:
