Introduction TV remains one of the most influential media consumption in the United States that determines the social interactions, the cultural values, and even the consumer behavior. Although digital media is increasing, television continues to be a powerful source of advertising and entertainment, and the disparities between people, by demographics, of television usage have been a much-researched topic (Jacobs -Pinson, 2025). The U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics (2025) noted that the mean time spent on television in the United States is nearly three hours (daily). Researchers have continuously looked at how race, socioeconomic background, lifestyle aspect are interconnected to their viewing behavior. Understanding these differences is very essential to industries like advertising that depend on demographic trends to come up with effective campaigns and target market groups. In this project, I used general social survey 2018 data to evaluate whether the average hours a day Americans spend in front of a television vary with race. I selected the topic because television is the most influential media in terms of culture creation and ad trends, and the analysis of differences in racial audiences can help to receive the information concerning audience segmentation practice. My research question is: Does race impact the average number of hours of television viewing? This study hypothesize that there exists significance difference in the mean amount of hours watched on television among the different races. More specifically, the null hypothesis (H₀) states that no significant differences exist, while the alternative hypothesis (H₁) suggests that racial groups differ in their television consumption. Literature Review Scholars have long documented differences in television viewing patterns across racial and ethnic groups. Early studies suggested that African American households historically consumed more television on average than White households, partly due to socioeconomic differences and disparities in access to other leisure activities (Signorielli & Morgan, 2001). Contemporary studies confirm that these disparities persist, although they are influenced by cultural preferences, streaming services, and internet access (Pei & Shen, 2019). The Total Audience Report 2013 by Nielsen discovered that black adults in the US spent more time watching conventional TV than white and Hispanic adults did with each one watching over 40 hours per week compared to white who watched about 30 hours weekly. The report indicated that television remains a vital source in the black homes, be it in entertainment or access to news (Foley, 2016). In contrast, Asian American viewers had lower Watch TV habits and higher streaming access habits, suggesting racial television viewer differences also intersect with technology access and generational preferences. These findings are supported by peer-reviewed research. For instance, American Press Institute (2016) analyzed racial difference in media consumption reported that African American respondents not only revealed having significant greater use of television as compared to White respondents, but also perceived a greater level of trust in its information. Similary, Simsek (2025) noted that racial minorities were more likely than Whites to use television as a main leisure activity, in part likely because of economic constraints in finding alternatives. These studies indicate that television consumption is not only a cultural activity but also is linked to larger themes of inequality and accessibility.
