(Introduction to Criminology) Provide a brief history of American law enforcement, describing the different eras American law enforcement dates back to the fall of the Roman Empire. During that era, there were few cities with few people who mainly resided in the village. During that era, it was easy to control people's behaviors. The feudal system or informal policing was used to control people's behavior. The feudal system worked by appointing a noble individual or a lord who was in charge of protecting the people from harm. The designated person acted as both a judge and a police officer and was tasked to solve any disputes that arose and control criminal activities. In return, the person caring for the people received payment in kind, for example, agricultural materials. Later, the Frankpledge system was used as a form of policing in medieval England. The Frankpledge system involved community policing by overseeing the people's behaviors and solving disputes. A wrongdoing by one individual would cause the whole community to suffer the consequences. As such, every person was their brother and sister's keeper to avoid unnecessary punishment. The 18th century marked the beginning of a new era in policing. The era marked the end of feudalism and the Frankpledge mode of policing and the beginning of what is famously known as modern policing. The introduction of contemporary policing was significantly shaped by the Industrial Revolution, which caused many changes in people's behavior. Industrialization introduced urbanization, and many people migrated from rural to urban areas in search of employment. Lack of ability to meet basic needs resulted in multiple crimes in the urban setups. Consequently, the Police Act was passed in 1829 to reinforce the authority of the police employed to keep law and order.
