The police officers and sheriffs serve distinct tasks in the state and county governments. The police officers are mandated to carry out most of the policing tasks within towns and cities, while the sheriffs carry out higher-rank tasks mainly in the county governments. The article also looks into the demographic characteristics, specifically the ethnicity of the rural and urban police officers in the United States.
