A summary of the reading
The article entitled 'Modern Policing' gives an overview of contemporary policing and its advancement in terms of legal frameworks and restrictions imposed on police officers and the issues faced by modern police officers. Additionally, the article explores the routine tasks carried out by police officers, the myths surrounding the police, and the aspects of misconduct and deviant behavior by the police officers.
America is made up of 50 states, and each state dictates how its policing unit and its organization are run. The policing system in America is divergent; there is no one-fits-all policing system. Therefore, every state has a different organization of the police force, a unique constitution and legal framework, and a different array of police forces. Despite the difference in the organization of the policing system, the requirements for police officers in all the states are almost the same. The police officers and sheriffs serve distinct tasks in the state and county governments. The police officers are mandated to carry out most of the policing tasks within towns and cities, while the sheriffs carry out higher-rank tasks mainly in the county governments. The article also looks into the demographic characteristics, specifically the ethnicity of the rural and urban police officers in the United States. The statistics reveal that the non-Hispanic officers are the majority (67%), while the least represented are the Alaska natives (0.02%). The nature of policing entails using force, distinguishing the police department from the other departments. There could be instances where police officers are compelled to use force. However, the use of force is highly discouraged and closely monitored by several groups, including human rights activists.
