(Introduction to Criminology) Summary of the reading The article titled Defining, classifying, and Measuring Crime gives an overview of multiple people's various definitions of Crime. Different people define Crime based on myths, the media, and how society views Crime. Therefore, the term crime is complex, dynamic, and not static, although the general view of the term crime is universal since there is an element of wrong-doing. There is a significant deviation between the Crime talked about in stories, myths, and reality. Some criminal incidents, for instance, robbery with violence, killing, and theft, have been amplified as though they are the leading criminal incidences constituting a crime. To some people, there are lesser and more significant criminal activities. The reality is that some illegal activities, such as robbery, occur often and attract severe consequences in the justice department. There are three main approaches to explaining the nature of Crime. The three approaches are legal, moral, and sociological. The media is obsessed with certain types of crimes they use to attract viewers. Most movies shown in the press have themes of common crimes such as human trafficking, robbery with violence, theft, and murder. The media's biased reporting of criminal activity has really impacted the perception of Crime. People associate Crime with some forms of illegal activity, leaving many other criminal activities, for instance, under-age children being sold alcohol and other substance abuse. Some criteria are used in defining or naming crimes, for example, the perpetrator of the Crime, the Crime's victim, the Crime's severity, and the Crime's place of occurrence. There are various types of crimes, for example, hate crimes, corporate crimes, sex crimes, white collar crimes, environmental crimes, and the list is endless. A critique of the reading The reading is adequate in content in terms of definition, classification, and measuring of Crime, as the title states. The article does not give the spiritual or cultural meaning of the term crime.
