Various officials have a social media presence and appear on local radio or host a local podcast. For this assignment, you

will prepare a briefing memo with talking points that are focused on a risk management or hazard mitigation message about

your community. The audience you are preparing your briefing material for consists of elected officials who do not have

subject matter expertise.

Include the elements listed below in your briefing memo.

Include the risk or hazard to the community, and provide three bullets addressing the primary message that you want to

share about the hazard or risk.

Provide a brief critique of the risk or hazard communication tools and existing strategies that are being used in your

community.

Identify the action that the message receiver should take to reduce the risk.

Include two samples of what officials would say in a Twitter or social media post.

Provide two questions and answers.

Include contact information on how the receivers can gain more information or actively participate.

Provide notes on lessons learned or best practices. For instance, you might provide a warning about being truthful in front of the media, you might share an instance where being truthful in the media went wrong, or you might show the potential repercussions that being untruthful can have on the information system.

Baltimore is significantly exposed to many natural hazards, especially coastal storms, flooding to extreme heat, and high winds. The natural hazards with climate impact residents’ livelihoods, businesses, infrastructure, and natural systems (Islam & Ryan, 2015). Baltimore community needs to be prepared to improve to respond and recover from hazards and risks through proper disaster preparedness.
Baltimore disaster management plan is anchored in Biltmore’s Disaster Preparedness and Planning Project (DP3). DP3 embodies Baltimore’s local strategies in addressing current and future hazards arising from climate change. DP3 is aligned with Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) requirements and standards.
DP3 incorporates the following core items:
* Identifying critical hazards facing Baltimore, including flooding, coastal risk factors such as hurricanes and storm surge, precipitation variability, extreme winds, and increasingly poor air quality.
* DP3 is guided by specific objectives such as shown:
1 Protection of health, welfare, and safety of residents.
2 Protecting structures and infrastructure against damages
3 Strengthening resilience capacity through elaborate hazard preventions and response measures anchored on policies.
* DP3 focuses on core strategic areas in hazard management, including infrastructure, buildings, natural systems, and public service. The disaster preparedness and response will involve a core focus on infrastructure where efforts and resources should be geared towards developing systems that protect energy, water, and transportation structure. The buildings in Baltimore are at risk of various hazards, and thereby, there is a need to adopt building designs that are resilient against hazards and can ensure resource conservation.
