In this letter, I would like to express my interest in Hofstra Law’s Paralegal Program. It is a task in itself for a person, such as myself, to allow another to fully grasp the principle of why I want to become a paralegal, let alone explain it within these pages. Like everybody else, at the back of my mind, I have the simple answer “I desire to use the set of skills and passion that I possess in order to help others while working within this specific field of law.”
As many others have said in the past and present, I wish I could say that I always wanted a career in law or that I wanted to go to law school. However, I would be lying if I decided to go down this route. For me, there are two reasons why I would like to pursue a career in law. The first reason is personal, and it entails a relationship that I would like to forget. In 2016, my ex-husband took me to court with an accusation, and I lost custody of my children. As a mother, my children are my heartbeat, and this loss greatly affected me mentally. At the time, my children needed urgent medical attention, and I could not get any legal assistance because I am an Asian woman who, at the time, was only a homemaker without any monthly income. I was forced to learn and do a lot of things by myself, including filing a motion.
While having this case, I observed and noted many things that transpired in the courtroom. For example, I took note of the way the judge and the attorneys communicated. Also, I took note of how cases were presented and the different arguments presented. This was life-changing to me, and from that point, I knew I wanted to become a paralegal.
