Every hospital suffers from the problem of inpatient falls. These falls curtail the progress of patients, negatively impact patient safety, and increase hospital expenditure. Within the medical-surgical unit, Cuttler, Barr-Walker, and Cuttler (2017) note that patients are at a higher risk of falling compared to patients within the intensive care unit. The researchers report that in the U.S., the medical-surgical units experience “between 3.67 and 6.26 falls per 1000 patient days.” Further, they report that of the injuries reported in the medical-surgical unit, 20% end up in injury, while 2% cause serious injuries to patients. Within the medical-surgical unit, numerous factors can cause or lead to patients falling. Some of these factors include the side effects of medication, a patient’s flawed mental status, and difficulty in movement. However, despite these factors, inpatient falls represent one of the most preventable issues hospitals face. With the adoption and implementation of apt interventions, the chances are high that hospitals will be able to lower and eliminate falls within their facilities.
There are numerous interventions that can be adopted to help deal with the problem of inpatient falls. One of the most effective interventions is known as purposeful rounding. Purposeful rounding mainly entails routinely checking on patients, responding to their needs, and monitoring patient movement at all times. With the adoption and implementation of this outcome, the expected outcome is that patient falls will reduce. Further, patient safety will be improved, the quality of care will be enhanced, and patient satisfaction should improve.

Literature on the implementation of purposeful rounding indicates that there is a likelihood that inpatient falls within the medical-surgical unit will reduce. In her study, Daniels (2016) discovered that implementing purposeful and timely rounds within a hospital setup helped reduce inpatient falls by 50%. The results above affirm the notion that the more hospitals embrace purposeful rounding, the higher the likelihood that patients will be safe within the medical-surgical unit.
