Describe in your own words the following two frameworks discussed in class that help us to understand the importance of human connection in the development of individuals and families. Explain how each of these two frameworks can be used to provide a more inclusive and comprehensive way to understand families- their experiences, outcomes, or functioning in society.

Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Model
Identify an example of a non-traditional family configuration (a configuration that exists outside the dominant social norms/construction of “the family” in some way). What makes this particular example non-traditional? Based on our learnings this semester, explain three ways in which this non-traditional family configuration results in lesser social inclusion, resources or support in the context of the broader society? What is one specific way we could better “normalize” this family configuration to reduce social disparities people with this family configuration face?
What are two types of health or medical stigma? Identify and discuss one way that health or medical stigma may show up in the context of families (other than HIV+ status)? In your example, explain what the situation is, how does stigma show up (what is the stigmatized identity), and what are the consequences/outcomes caused by stigmatization in this case? Provide a specific social solution or intervention that could remedy the impacts of stigma in this case.
Using recent research and data on housing in our state and nation provided in the course, identify three specific housing issues, problems or related inequities that families currently face. The Siksika Tipi and Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems model
Human development relies on communal bonds, and the above two theories taught at school contribute to a better understanding of the need to interrelate as people or a family. The origin of siksika tipi is based on the teachings of indigenous individuals in which identity is based on relations, balance and collective responsibility. The framework demonstrates that individuals get empowered in circles of kinship, land, spirituality and cooperation. Such teachings substitute the notion of prioritizing the needs and instead concentrate on how the different wellbeings are interconnected. The framework can help families comprehend the interaction of emotional, social and cultural needs in the various stages of life. Siksika tipi is more inclusive since it honors Indigenous wisdom and confirms the ways of living that the western models have chosen to ignore.
The ecological systems model by Bronfenbrenner describes human development in terms of a number of layers of environment. The microsystem consists of family, peer and daily relationships. These relationships are tied together by the mesosystem and indirectly through the exosystem which encompasses workplaces, schools and systems that affect families. The macrosystem reflects cultural values, laws and beliefs that determine the life of the family. The chronosystem captures the time change and significant life events. The model promotes deeper appreciation of families since it acknowledges the fact that external forces influence behavior and outcomes. That is the reason families which are under poverty, or have discrimination difficulties or migration can be better understood as their experiences are not formed by individual decisions only. Siksika tipi and ecological systems theory broaden the definition of human relationship and provide families with more inclusive means of describing their functioning and wellbeing.
Non-traditional family configuration
An example of non-traditional family structure is one with two close friends who are raising a child together but without a romantic relationship. They organize the upbringing of the child, share the roles and decisions, but they are not a couple living together and do not create a nuclear family of a two-parent family. The family arrangement is not conventional since the cultural norms of family are dictated by dominance of biological bonding, marriage, or romantic relationship. Most of the social discourses even presuppose that parenting should occur in a couple format and thus, a family constructed on friendship and mutual commitment does not fit in the conventional sense of the family.
The configuration experiences reduce social inclusion and support in three dimensions. Firstly, most of the institutions presume that parents should be married or romantically involved and this poses a barrier in schools, hospitals and social services. Co-parents also risk being questioned regarding their relation or being perceived as unequal particularly where only one of them is a blood relative to a child. Secondly, legal ways of addressing co-parenting do not usually defend the two parents equally. The non-biological parent might have a difficult time exercising decision-making rights without being married or having biological ties, a fact that causes more insecurity to the child and the caregiver. Thirdly, there will be stigma in the family by relatives or people surrounding the family that will consider their structure odd or unstable. This kind of judgment renders the society less accepting and can cause the child to not feel like others who live in normal households.
