Franz Fanon’s work on Black Skin, White Mask, is still relevant in modern society. The biased relationship between blacks and whites still prevails in western culture. One wonders how long the issue would take over the community. People from different parts of the world have had different opinions regarding the two different races. On the other hand, racism has affected blacks significantly, resulting in inferiority feelings and the desire to become whites ( Fanon, 28). Although Fanon states the population is affected by discrimination only, understanding the issue from a broader view shows that they may desire the whites' lives in the effort to attain freedom. The whites are not settled either. They wish to escape slavery and achieve a human level where they can appreciate fellow human beings (Fanon, 28). These aspects show that each of the races struggles and fights a battle that may not end soon since the whites have not accepted blacks as humans who deserve equality. Hence, racism and discrimination are still prevalent in modern society, making Fanons work relevant to the people living westernization.
First, the attitudes and behaviors towards blacks have not disappeared but changed to induce favorable terms in social criticism, correlating with what happened during Fanon's narration. The only difference is the expression of the words, and it does not hold as long as blacks continue suffering from the whites. “Modern racism, a term coined by John B. McConahay, refers to one type of racism that is more subtle and indirect than its traditional counterpart.” (Morrison and Kiss, 1). The name modern racism reveals that the practice happens in society even now but in different forms. Does the conformation change anything? Does it make blacks feel better? Anyone would agree that the answer to the questions is no. Fanon's narration shows how the people of color suffered direct intimidation to the extent of making the whites their destiny (Fanon, 31). They wished for the white man's life not because they wanted to adapt their oppression stance but because they desired freedom and the will to get a position of doing what they wanted.
