How gender nonconformity in children affect parents
Gender nonconformity in children is a delicate matter as depicted by Maddie’s story. At that age, the parent is the ultimate arbitrator and the decision to support or deny change affects the upbringing of the transgender child. From the story, what is evident is that as the child is transitioning the parent is also undergoing the most challenging phase of their lives. The way the parent will choose to deal with the situation affects the relationship with the child, spouse, family, and even society. The essay seeks to evaluate how gender non-conformity in children negatively affects parents.
Parents undergo psychological trauma as they feel a sense of loss which can lead to depression and concerns with the state of their mental health. Fathers are more susceptible to traumas because of the high rates of homophobia. Maddie's father had a hard time accepting and underwent mourning the loss of the son he thought he had. Research shows that this is because they have strong beliefs in traditional masculinity and this makes them more distressed than the mother (Jadwin-Cakmak et al. 4).
