Culture and Perception of the World
Every individual is usually influenced greatly by the sociocultural backgrounds that they come from. It plays a key role in literally everything that the person does and plays a critical role in an individual’s worldview. Culture can greatly influence our perception of the world, be it how we experience pain or how we show happiness or sadness. Transitioning from Hong Kong to the United States at the age of fourteen gives one a completely different dimension of this experience, especially moving from two very distinctive cultural environments with various values, norms, and expectations.
Culture and Perception of the World
They say that culture acts as a lens through which we see and interpret the world. It is always interesting to see how an individual gets born into a certain cultural environment, grows up believing in what that culture feeds him for a significant chunk of his childhood, then later on his worldview is changed. Thanks to globalization, there is always bound to be an impact of how one perceives the world from their culture and through an outside lens as well. Culture affects our perceptions by providing a value-behavior-belief framework that guides our understanding of what surrounds us. For instance, most Western cultures overemphasize individualism and independence, socializing most people to take success as a product of their effort and self-reliance. On the other hand, most Eastern cultures, including Hong Kong, have very high collectivism and community orientation, such that success is often viewed as a collective achievement, promoting very high interdependence.
